This week an order of gorgeous hand printed cotton tape and fabric arrived from Jesse Breytenbach, a printmaker from South Africa. All of the things in the package are beautiful. The red scissors hand printed cotton tape is the inspiration for this linocut project.
I've made a linocut of a Singer Sewing Machine similar to one that sat in our bike shed when I was a little. Usually black ink feels a bit "heavy" for my style of linocuts, but for this one it reminds me of the heavy black metal base frame and broad pedal of the machine. After a few more trial runs on paper I'm aiming to try printing with it on fabric.

Wow - this is truly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see it on fabric!X
Totally cool... Me too. Pruxxx
ReplyDeleteThe black is perfect for that print. Great one.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you going to do with the tape and fabric?
That is just amazing. You ALWAYS amaze me. I love it. LOVE IT.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll be coming back here later to just look at it again.
Wow.
Cierto, el negro es el mejor color para este proyecto. Me recuerda a la maquina que tenia mi abuela en la habitación de costura.
ReplyDeletePrecioso.
This is FANTASTIC Chantal. You clever, talented lady. :)

Thanks all!
ReplyDeleteKate, it's a little something I'm working on that I hope we can take to the markets with us! It will be for those of us who love to 'Pin' : )
Nuria, It's so cool that from the other side of the world, 70 odd years ago our grandmothers were using similar sewing machines!
You are SO clever Chantal.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, this post reminds me that my Mum is 'looking after' a little black sewing machine of mine - I think that it might be time to reclaim it.

looks great in print. I actually saw one of these at the oppy yesterday, but the $300 price tag was a bit beyond me!
ReplyDeleteYour detailed stamps always amaze me!
ReplyDeleteLovely! The black ink works perfectly!
ReplyDeleteYou've done an amazing job with this stamp. I love it in the black. xo
ReplyDeleteI love this.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Our local cobbler still uses and old singer to mend shoes. I love seeing the old machines at work!
ReplyDeleteHey Chantal the detail you have put into this print is wonderful. I love it as I love all your prints.
ReplyDeleteWe had one of these when I was young as well as an electric machine. I learnt to sew on the treadle machine. Makes me sound reeeeeally old........
They are lovely, old, decorative pieces and your print is just brilliant.
Love the scissors ribbon too, very cute.
Enjoy your day,
Claire :}
Love the image Its gorgeous! I learned to sew on my Grandmothers treadle just like this one!
ReplyDeleteHi Chantal. Love the Singer. I remember my Nana in Kalgoorlie using her peddal singer. Brought back great memories. And the skill you have developed in creating linocuts and stamps is awsome. Cheers C
ReplyDeleteHi Chantal, a quick comment from Canada - Love this sewing machine! Chum likes it too! She wants to go to an art store now to look for eraser cutting tools. Ha! Keep on doing these lovely household objects.. I think all women who sew need a copy! Love KK
ReplyDeleteChantal! I love it. The linocut really communicates that vintage feel. I've only sewn with old vintage Singers and adore them...thanks for giving them some love!
